Tequila

Learn the meaning of blanco, reposado and añejo.

The Gift of Agave

Tequila - which originates from the Tequila region in the Mexican state of Jalisco - should be sipped slowly, not slammed, to be fully appreciated.

Tequila is made by distilling the fermented juices from the blue agave plant; the highest-quality tequila is 100% agave and not mixed with alcohol derived from other sugars.

Blanco: White or silver tequila has a clear appearance and is usually bottled immediately after distillation. It sometimes spending a few weeks in steel tanks and is quickly aged (if at all) in oak.

Reposado: “Rested” tequilas spend at least two months, or often up to nine months, aging in wooden casks for a richer flavor.

Añejo: Aged tequilas are stored for at least 12 months, but up to four years, in wooden barrels (often previously used in bourbon production).
